Oh, Literary Survey Course, thou art a crown of thorns piercing my mind, causing my eyes to bleed (not quite that bad, but does the print in the course book have to be so small? And does everything written pre 1600 have to be in poetic language? As if Old and Middle English wasn’t already difficult enough) and a yoke weighing down on my shoulders (literary. The aforementioned book weighs 2kg+ and has 3000+ pages!)
So, anyway… Today I waded through the required reading6 for the Reformation (or 1660-1785) And a large part of it was Oroonoko (1688) by Aphra Behn (1640?-1689).
To my surprise I kind of enjoyed it. Still I felt the same way I do when I read some fanfiction stories. “This has so much potential, if only the story was told differently!” In this case it mean that I would have liked for it to be more in the moment, to describe each happening and have abundantly more dialogue. Having everything recounted instead of demonstrated, shown as it happened, makes for very heavy reading. Yet the main story of an African Prince (Oroonoke) and the love of his life (Imoinda) who end up as slaves in Central America was dramatic and engaging.
Maybe one day I will try my hand at writing my own version. The copy right to this work is after all free.
Spoiler Alert for Supernatural S9E18
I’m currently catching up on Supernatural and I’m watching the mentioned episode and I have to pause every now and then because honestly, as cliché and fangirlish as it is, I’m too full of feels. I’m repressing shouts all the time and it has everything to do with a certain Angel/Trickster/Norse God who is back. When the video with Casa Erotica showed up as Castiel was leaving his motel room I thought about him. But I also didn’t think that he would actually show up. Then there he is in the video, moustache in place, more or less doing a Moriarty asking if you remember/missed me. As he did something similar after The Hammer of the Gods in Season 5 I thought that maybe he’s just left a video, but then Castiel turns around and Gabriel is standing there. I’m so happy! He’s back! I didn’t know I could get this happy over this and I had to share, even if it’s just going out into the void and nobody ever reads this. Gabriel’s back and he’s finally said that he will be the Arch Angel he was meant to be. There are two armies of Loki and I love them both.
I don’t know yet if he’s actually back though. Maybe it’s Metatron messing with us, as it is he who is telling the story in this episode, but either way, seeing Gabriel again has made me very, very happy. And I so hope that he’s back for real.
Edit: 5 minutes later:
Nooooo! Damn you Metatron! Ah well, it was good while it lasted.
